1) Beautiful wine starts in the vineyard. Memorable wine is not made, it is grown. We are excited to be working with some amazing vineyard sites, harvest crews, wine growers, enologists, vineyard managers, and loving beings who feel the same way. All of the grapes we source are from sustainable, biodynamic or organic sites. Each decision we make in influencing the grapes (and eventually the wine) is methodically pondered + made with intention + care. Native yeasts. Timely picks. Low SO2 adds. Experimentation.

ALL WINE has sulphur as it is a byproduct of fermentation when making wine, and the amounts vary. To that end - we add a little sulphur to some juice + no sulphur to others depending on the wine + style. These are the bumpers in our wine making philosophy.

2) Varietals should be explored while understanding & staying true to sense of place + to the vines themselves. How does terroir express? How is global warming disrupting what has been? Why have things always been done a certain way?

Questions are how we grow + learn and Quarky Wines is intended to provoke thought from the experienced drinker + invite questions from those just getting into wine culture.

Ultimately the questions arises - where is wine going?

Our goal is to highlight the wonderful versatility of each grape via racking techniques, (co)fermentation, vessel management, lees contact & sometimes trying weird shit rather than hiding the juice itself. We love to experiment and follow where this leads us.

3) Wine is communal, whatever that looks like to you - AND - at its purest sense, is fermented grape juice from really hard working + down to Earth farmers & their crew. Wine is a drink for the people. Y’all can keep that high brow pretentiousness.

Maybe it is a glass while on a Dungeons & Dragons quest, perhaps it is swapping bottles with 8-10 of your friends out of coffee cups, & often it is best shared making memories, discovering joy, and with a full heart for those in the moment. Wine is a tool that can transcend if we would just let it. It is a black hole of learning, discovery, & exploration with a multiverse of ways to enjoy.

From our end, what it is not, is exclusive or judgmental.

4) Wine is nothing without community, ALL of our community. We have a responsibility to uplift, see, protect, highlight, encourage, listen to, and involve our most marginalized folk that for far too long have been cast aside in this nation. Wine has the ability to cross ethnic, socio-economic, inter-generational, and geopolitical borders if one just has an open mind.

We are unapologetically anti-racist, inclusive of gender identity & expression, see & acknowledge the value that ALL people in our communities have within themselves & that they share with others. We will frame people by their innate assets, and not their perceived deficits.

Quarky Wines was built to create & uphold safe spaces in the wine industry while welcoming people as they are - and we will respect what they bring to each space that they are in.

There is a major difference in you are welcome here & this was built for you. Our goal is to always build with open hearts & a loving mind.

We are but stewards of Earth, as we should be of one another. Pop. Love. Share. Crush. Enjoy.

  • Ivy Tech Community College Akoma Scholarship

For a plethora of reasons, Ivy Tech has a special place in the heart of Quarky Wines. Leo graduated from Ivy in 2016, has served on the State Board of Trustees for the College, and is currently on the Ivy Tech Foundation Board. In 2020, with the help of leadership on campus, and in the height of protests in Louisville Ky against police brutality - the Akoma Scholarship was created to give Black + Brown students support and access in higher education.
